The global economic crisis was an enormous force for change, pushing banks
to look inwards to survive in a highly volatile economy. Many of the banks
we spoke to felt this meant they were distracted and focused elsewhere as
other changes were happening around them, whilst other industries not so
affected by the crisis were able to continue meeting these challenges.
These internal distractions, however, are reducing in
intensity as the global economy stabilises. Now banks
can start focusing on the external trends that are shaping
the world they operate in. From our interviews, we
have identified five forces driving change across the
banking sector: how to attract and retain the right talent;
expectations of technology and digital services from
customers and employees; real estate supply and cost
in global financial centres; cost pressures from reduced
margins; and increased regulation.
